Renowned as a spiritual genius, 13th century Zen Master Dogens major works are now available in English translations, but the broad implications of his place in Zen Buddhist history has not been widely appreciated. This international, four-day conference will focus on the uniqueness of the many different facets of Master Dogens teachings and their potential implications on the future evolution of western Zen.
This international gathering of lay and monastic practitioners will be the first Dogen conference solely sponsored by the American Buddhist community. Americas premier scholars and teachers of Dogen will present a historical perspective of Dogens life and explore his various works, with an eye to the relevance of these teachings to the modern practitioner. Interspersed with the talks and panel discussions will be readings of some of Dogens poetry in both Japanese and English. It is hoped that the atmosphere will be both celebratory as well as informative. Opportunities will exist for persons not familiar with Dogen to experience first hand some aspects of his teachings such as Zazen, Liturgy and Oryoki. The conference is sponsored by Zen Mountain Monastery and the Mountains and Rivers Order, supported in part by a grant from the Soto Zen Buddhist International Center. Presenters include: Prof. Paula Arai, Carleton College Please check back here as more information becomes available. 7,707 visits since December 1,2003 |
