Precepts I
Introduction to the Buddhist Precepts
with Shugen Sensei

The moral and ethical teachings of the Buddha are fundamental to all schools of Buddhism, and they are a vital aspect of training within the Mountains and Rivers Order. They are an essential pointer for living an enlightened life. Easily misunderstood as a simple list of rules, the precepts are a profound expression of compassion grounded in one-pointed awareness and wisdom. The extent to which the precepts become real in our lives is equal to how deeply we explore our own ground of being.
How are we to live as responsible and awakened beings in this challenging world? How can we work towards enjoying our own freedom and comfort without causing harm to others? Can the precepts guide us in becoming confident, caring and self-initiating in these difficult times?
In this retreat we will examine the moral and ethical teachings of Buddhism. We will devote attention to the evolution of the Mahayana precepts and their basis in selflessness, and we will explore how they are brought to life. Using zazen, talks and discussions to elicit honest reflection, this retreat will introduce us to these ancient and profoundly relevant touchstones of the Buddha Way. This retreat is required for MRO students wishing to formally receive the precepts. Recommended reading:The Heart of Being by John Daido Loori, Roshi.
