Week-Long & Weekend Sesshins

Week-Long Sesshin

Characterized by silence and deep introspection, sesshin is recommended to anyone who is sincerely interested in experiencing intensive Zen training. We wake up each day before dawn to begin a schedule that includes 7 to 10 hours of zazen, chanting services, formal silent meals in the zendo (oryoki), work practice, and talks by teachers and/or senior students. Sesshin is an opportunity to receive personal guidance in private interviews with the teachers, to draw from the tremendous strength of people practicing together, and to experience the deep stillness that lies within each one of us. Because sesshin is a very intensive retreat, those wishing to attend should first complete an Introduction to Zen Training Retreat. Most sesshins may be joined in progress, some as late as Friday evening.

Weekend Sesshin

The weekend sesshin is perfect for those who want an introduction to sesshin practice or for more experienced practitioners who are unable to attend the longer retreats. The retreat begins Friday evening with an orientation to introduce first-time participants to oryoki, face-to-face teachings, and the spirit and schedule of sesshin. Once sesshin begins, we immerse ourselves in the rigorous practice of self-awakening. Participants must have completed an Introduction to Zen Training Retreat or have participated in sesshins at another Zen center.
